In victories over Princeton and CSUN, San Diego State wins back-to-back games for the first time this season

March 6, 2022 (San Diego) - After competing 10 straight times on the road to open the 2022 season, the No. 21-ranked San Diego State water polo team won both its games on Sunday at the Aztec Aquaplex to put together consecutive wins for the first time this year.

Freshman Rose Kanemy scored five times to lead the Aztecs to victory in its 2022 home opener.
After surrendering two goals in the first period, the Aztecs unleashed a scoring barrage in the second period. San Diego State totaled five unanswered goals to assume control of the game.
Lucia Carballo opened the streak with a tally at the 6:39 mark and was followed just over a minute later by a strike from Valhalla alum Spencer Samuel which tied the game at 2-2 with 5:35 remaining before the intermission. Kanemy got her first goal of the game with 4:35 to go and was followed by a tally from Karli Canale. Kanemy picked up her second score with 39 seconds to play in the second to make the score 5-2, but a late goal from CSUN made it 5-3 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Laurene Padilla scored to give the Aztecs a 6-3 advantage and after an answer by CSUN it was a two-goal game with just under six and a half minutes to play in the third. San Diego State then got back-to-back strikes from Canale, at the 4:55 mark, and Kendall Houck with 1:24 to get SDSU’s three goal lead back at 8-5. CSUN got the last goal of the period, with 32 seconds left, and the teams went to the final eight minutes with the Aztecs up 8-6.
Valhalla alum Katie Ratcliff, Canale, and Kanemy all scored in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter to push the SDSU advantage to 11-6. Kanemy’s fourth goal came with 3:45 left and was sandwiched between a pair of CSUN tallies to make it 12-8.
Kanemy scored at the 2:01 mark and Sophia Righetti followed that goal with one of her own, with 1:13 left, to make it 14-8. The Matadors picked up two late goals to make the final score 14-10.
Kanemy led the team with eight shots, Canale produced five, Padilla had 3 and Dayna Bond, Ratcliff and Samuel had a pair each. Carballo, Houck, Jessica Leckich, Sydney Hurst, Righetti and Faith Cerussi took one shot each.
Raquel de Pinho went the distance, made six saves, and earned the victory.

It took two overtimes and a sudden victory period to decide a winner between the Aztecs and Princeton Tigers. With San Diego State getting the win on a Lauren Padilla goal with 15 seconds to play in the sudden victory period.
Princeton jumped on SDSU for two goals in the first and another, 37 seconds into the second period, to stake itself to a 3-0 lead. The Aztecs got on the board with a goal from Padilla with 5:58 to go in the half, but just over 40 seconds later the Tigers scored again to reestablish it’s three-goal advantage at 4-1.
San Diego State then put together three straight tallies to end the quarter. They got back-to-back strikes from Rose Kanemy, at the 3:39 and 2:25 marks, and Dayna Bond scored just inside a minute to play to send the game to the intermission tied 4-4.
Each team scored twice in the third. The Aztecs got tallies from Spencer Samuel and Kendall Houck, at the 3:48 and 3:05 marks, respectively. Those goals were sandwiched between a pair of Princeton strikes to make the score 6-6 after 24 minutes.
In the final period of regulation, the teams traded three goals each. Samuel scored with 6:31 to go and Princeton answered 36 seconds later. Karli Canale put the Aztecs back in front with 3:43 on the clock and again the Tigers answered with a goal with 2:17 to go. Canale put SDSU back in front at the 1:58 mark, but a Princeton goal with 24 seconds left sent the game to overtime.
In the first extra period, Princeton scored with 15 seconds left and it looked like it would be the Tigers game, but Kanemy found the back of the net as time expired to extend the game into a second three-minute overtime. Again, the Tigers scored first, but a Samuel tally with 55 second to go sent the game to a three minute sudden-victory period.
The teams battled for two minutes and twenty seconds before Padilla sent the fans home happy with her second strike of the game and the final score of 12-11.
Padilla and Kanemy led the Aztec attack with seven shots apiece. Canale took five shots, Bond four, Samuel three, and Houck and Lucia Carballo produced two shots each. The Aztecs got single shots from Jessica Leckich, Sydney Hurst, Klara Goldstein and Amanda Chambers.
Santana alum Zoe Morgan played all 41 minutes, totaled eight saves and earned the win.
