Aztecs fall in four to Cougars

March 15, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s tennis suffered a 4-0 loss to the University of Houston on Friday as the Cougars clinched the match by claiming the doubles points and first three singles matchups.

The Aztecs had close contests on each doubles court on Friday, but junior Mia Smith and freshman Agustina Rimoldi Godoy ultimately dropped the second-seeded matchup, 6-4, to Sophie Gerits and Ndindi Ndunda. In the No. 1 match, sophomore Nnena Nadozie and freshman Alicia Melosch held onto their duel against Mimi Kendall-Woseley and Elena Tairyan but ultimately fell 7-6 (6) to hand the Cougars their first match point.

In singles action, Melosch was the first to fall in the fourth seed where she dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Jovana Vukovic. Freshman Shakhnoza Khatamova also suffered a loss in the match, dropping 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Ndindi Ndunda in the No. 1 position, while the Cougars clinched a victory in the sixth seed where Stephanie Belovukovic topped Rimoldi Godoy 7-5, 6-2.

THE NOTE

The Aztecs drop Friday’s decision after winning two straight earlier this week.

UP NEXT

San Diego State (8-7) look ahead to two home contests next week, first against Yale on Tuesday, March 19 and again versus conference opponent Colorado State on Thursday, March 21.  First serve is set for 2 p.m. in both matchups.
