December 4, 2023 (San Diego) - The Aztec women’s basketball (5-4) shook off a slow start to come back to beat Cal State Los Angeles (4-2) 76-71 in overtime inside Viejas Arena Monday evening.

“We didn’t play our best basketball, but I’m happy we were able to get the win tonight,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “I knew [Cal State Los Angeles] was a good team and they came out and punched us in the gut, but we were able to make some plays down the stretch to get the win.”

Adryana Quezada paced SDSU with 19 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double as an Aztec. Abby Prohaska was one rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds. Kim Villalobos chipped in 13 points.

The Golden Eagles came out hot, making five of their first seven threes and took a 17-5 lead to start the game. The Aztecs defense tightened up in the second quarter where they forced eight turnovers in a five-minute stretch and pulled within a point at the halftime break.

The game was tied at 49 entering the final quarter. SDSU went up four, then the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to take a four-point lead themselves.

The teams then traded one-point leads until an Adryana Quezada free throw with 14 seconds left put SDSU up two points.

CSULA’s Nicole Flennaugh then scored on a driving lay-in with four seconds left to tie it at 66. Abby Prohaska had a look from three in the final seconds, but it rimmed out.

The Aztecs were 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to hold off the Golden Eagles’ upset.

Cal State Los Angeles finished the game with 13 three-pointers while shooting 45 percent from deep. The Aztecs were just 4-for-15 from three.
