February 25, 2017 (San Diego) - SDSU women’s basketball returned home after some tough losses on the road against UNLV and Fresno State.  Today at home against the Colorado State Rams was their chance to turn things around.  The Aztecs wore pink on their jerseys today in their annual Play4Kay game to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.  Yow was the former head coach of North Carolina State women's basketball before she passed away from breast cancer in January of 2009.

“Fight Like a Girl” the Aztecs did indeed in the first quarter, forcing turnovers and scoring, including two threes by junior guards McKynzie fort and Geena Gomez.  But the 21-6 (13-2 in the Mountain West) Rams quickly took over.  The Aztecs fought hard to stay in it and ended the first quarter down by six, 20-14.

At the beginning of the second quarter, it looked like the Aztecs would have some bite, but the Rams quickly took over once again.  This time, they pulled way out of the Aztecs’ reach.  SDSU underperformed again, unable to make easy layups to cut the lead.  They were absolutely stymied by the Rams and trudged to the locker room down by 16, 44-27.

The third quarter was much of the same.  The Rams held the Aztecs to just four points in the third and killed them with threes and and-ones.  They headed into the final frame up 59-31.

In the fourth quarter, the Rams kept up the pressure and bulldozed the Aztecs.  Though the scarlet and black did score 15 points, they lost big time to Colorado State 80-49 to fall to 9-18 overall and 5-11 in Mountain West play.

“We're trying to find our way right now and we got beat by a really good team,” head coach Stacie Terry said post-game.  “What we were trying to do was get the ball out of their two best players’ hands and we succeeded in that, but where we failed was those other players hitting shots that we weren't hoping or expecting them to hit.  We gotta go back to the drawing board and figure out how we can get shots against the zone.  We're not shooting the ball well right now.  We've got to find a way to have fun with this game again and I think once we do that, then the W’s will start coming again.”

The lady Aztecs are on the road against Air Force Tuesday night.  Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
