November 10, 2023 (San Diego) - Aztecs basketball is back and tonight, the lady Aztecs took the court against Cal Baptist.

It looked like the Aztecs were going to come out on the attack off the tip, but the Lancers jumped out to a quick 8-0 run with a three by junior Nhug Bosch-Duran, a follow-up layup by sophomore forward Grace Schmidt and another three by senior San Diego native Chloe Webb.  Aztecs senior forwards Kim Villalobos and Adryana Quezada stopped the bleeding with jumpers and senior guard Abby Prohaska added a crucial three at the end of the quarter, but the Aztecs couldn’t get much of anything to fall and trailed by 11, 25-14, after one.

The second quarter saw more of the same struggle for the Aztecs, but worse and with costly turnovers added.  The girls put up some semblance of a fight at the end of the quarter, but it didn’t get an E for effort and the red and black found themselves in the same position they were at the end of the first, down 11, 39-28, after two quarters. They were shooting only 36.7% from the field and a measly 10% from beyond the arc.

Both teams seemed to take their pedals off the gas in the third and instead, lots of turnovers and sloppy play took their place.  But towards the end of the quarter, the Aztecs started crawling back slowly, led by Villalobos, but they were still making some costly mistakes and they trailed by six after three, 58-52.

Senior guard Jada Lewis nailed three crucial three pointers in the fourth and the Aztecs were within reach, but Lancers senior forward Kinsley Barrington hit the dagger three and Cal Baptist dug into their heels in the final seconds to down the Aztecs 76-68.  Lewis led the 40%-shooting Aztecs with 20 points.
