December 30, 2023 (San Diego) - The Aztec women’s basketball team (10-4, 1-0) extended their win streak to six games with a thrilling 74-71 overtime win over Colorado State (9-3, 0-1) in the Mountain West opener Saturday.

Jada Lewis scored 22 points, including the game-winner, while also bringing in a season-high nine rebounds. In overtime, Lewis hit a three as the shot-clock expired to put SDSU up three with seven seconds left. The Aztecs then got a stop to seal the win.

“Jada literally shoots those shots every day, including today,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Huton said about Lewis’ game-winner. “She spends a good 30 to 40 minutes getting up shots before games so we are confident that it will go in when she shoots.”

“I wasn’t thinking, just to shoot it,” Lewis said about her game-winner. “It was just muscle memory. I knew the clock was winding down, so I took it.”

Abby Prohaska also finished with 22 points and seven rebounds. She, along with Lewis and Alyssa Jackson, forced CSU’s McKenna Hofschild to miss 17 shots.

The game featured 10 ties, 10 lead changes and each team had a 10-0 run as the game momentum swung back and forth before needing five extra minutes to decide a winner.

The Aztecs used a 16-4 run to lead by as much as eight in the first quarter. SDSU committed just one first half turnover and led by six at the break.

The Rams had a 16-2 run in the third quarter and led by as much as nine early in the fourth quarter before the Aztecs responded with a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead with 5:20 left.

Tied at 60, the Aztecs had the ball with nine seconds left in regulation but couldn’t convert and the game went into overtime.

SDSU outscored the Rams 14-11 in the extra period with Lewis scoring eight points, including the final dagger.

Hofschild finished with 34 points and 12 assists.

The Aztecs have now beaten CSU five straight times at home.

The Aztecs held McKenna Hofschild to 4-for-13 shooting in the fourth quarter and overtime.

THE NOTE

This was the first time since January 15, 2022, vs. Boise State that two Aztecs scored 20 or more points (Asia Avinger and Mallory Adams).
