SDSU WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES IN TIE FOR EIGHTH AT BRUIN WAVE INVITATIONAL

February 25, 2020 (San Luis Obispo) - The San Diego State women’s golf team finished in a tie for eighth place Tuesday at the Bruin Wave Invitational on the par-72, 6,103-yard San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The Aztecs shot a 16-over-par 304 in the final round Tuesday to finish at 55-over 919, tying with Pepperdine for eighth. SDSU was 16 shots clear of 10th-place finisher Washington State (+71) and just two shots behind Cal Poly (+53) for seventh place. No. 2 USC won the invitational at 14-over 878, followed closely by No. 14 UCLA (+16), Northwestern (+18) and No. 16 Oregon (+18).

Gioia Carpinelli (Boppelsen, Switzerland) was San Diego State’s top finisher in 15th after carding a 4-over 76 in today’s final round. Carpinelli was 1-under through the first six holes (the Aztecs started on hole No. 10), but had five bogeys the rest of the way to fall from eighth to 15th.

Fernanda Escauriza (Asunción, Paraguay) matched Carpinelli with a final-round 4-over 76, tying for 25th overall at 12-over 228. Like Carpinelli, Escauriza totaled one birdie and five bogeys on the day.

Sara Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden), meanwhile, made up the most ground of anyone in the 63-player field on Tuesday after firing a 1-under 71. Kjellker, who opened with back-to-back 79s on Monday, rallied with three birdies over her final six holes to move up 18 places for the round to finish in a tie for 28th at 13-over 229.

Benice Ilas (Ayala Alabang, Philippines) carded a 9-over 81 on Tuesday, finishing 52nd overall at 23-over 239, while an 11-over 83 by April Ranches (San Diego) had her tied for 56th at 28-over 244.

Nortwestern’s Kelly Sim and UCLA’s Emma Spitz shared medalist honors at 5-under 211 for the tournament.

San Diego State heads to the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kane’ohe Golf Club in Kane’ohe, Hawaii on March 10-11.
