Bernice Olivarez Ilas (5th) and Anika Sato (8th) both had career-best scores

November 1, 2022 (Coral Gables, Fla.) - Behind three career-best performances, the Aztec women’s golf team placed sixth (out of 12) with a season-best score of 866 (+2). 

Bernice Olivarez Ilas placed fifth with a career-low 211 (71-67-73, -5) and Anika Sato shot a 213 (71-73-69, -3), also a career-low, buoyed by a 69 in her final round Tuesday to earn an eighth-place finish. Sammy Lee also had a career-best performance with a 223 (75-74-74, +7).

 

The Aztecs improved their score every round (290-289-287) and shot a 287 Tuesday, their best 18-hole score on the season.

 

Olivarez Ilas entered the final round in first place and then shot a one-over-par 73 to slip to fifth. For the second round in a row, she collected an eagle. On Tuesday, it was the par five 459-yard 18th hole. She was one of two golfers to have two eagles in the tournament, and she finished tied for the best score on par fives (4.42).

 

Sato’s 69 Tuesday tied for the second-best score on the day. She had a team-high five birdies, including three in her first six holes. She finished the tournament tied for the best score on par threes, averaging 2.75 strokes.

 

April Ranches and Sammy Lee both tied with a 223. Ranches shot a 71 today, matching her career-best score. She tallied four birdies to go with three bogeys.

 

Lee’s 223 is a new career best 54-hole score. She shot a 74 Tuesday, matching her second-round score from Monday,

 

Anna Lina Otten’s day was highlighted by an eagle on the par five 480-yard first hole. She then followed that up with a birdie on the second hole and finished with a 74 on Tuesday, her best round of the tournament.

 

Andrea Gomez, who was playing as an individual and in her first tournament since the spring of 2021, finished tied with Otten with a 225. She also improved each round, going from a 78 to 74 to a 73 Tuesday

 

UP NEXT

The Aztecs are off for the rest of the calendar year. Their next tournament is the Lamkin Invitational Feb. 13-14, SDSU’s lone home tournament.
