February 16, 2023 (San Diego) San Diego State women’s tennis fell in their fourth home match of the season on Thursday afternoon, 5-2 to Hawai’i at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The Aztecs (3-2) battled the wind and the Rainbow Wahine (3-4) throughout the afternoon. In doubles play all three Aztec pairings battled back and forth with their opponents throughout the matches. But it was Hawai’i who were able to win the doubles point. They did so by earning a 6-2 win on court two to being doubles play and then earned the point on court one where Alicia Melosch and Rania Azziz fell 6-4.

As for singles play, the Aztecs also had mixed fortunes. Hawai’i took an early 2-0 lead when Tamara Arnold was forced to retire three games into her match. Over on court five however, Azziz earned the first point of the day for the Aztecs, and did so in dominate fashion. The transfer from LSU set the tone in the first set of her match, and won 6-0 without losing a single game in the set. She followed that up with another big win in set two, winning that set 6-1 to claim the point for the Aztecs.

The rest of the Aztecs had a more difficult time in singles play. Over on court three Dariya Detkovskaya battled every game in her match, but fell 5-7, 2-6. The result gave Hawai’i a 3-1 lead overall. The Rainbow Wahine then clinched the match on court six where Andreea Velcea fell in her match, despite battling for each point, 4-6, 4-6.

Alicia Melosch earned another point for the Aztecs on court four where after dropping the first set, 4-6, she bounced back in a big way. Melosch swung the momentum of the match back in her favor when she earned a 6-3 win in set two, and followed that up with a dominant display in the third set, winning 6-1 to take the match. The final match of the day was a showdown on court one where Andjela Skrobonja went toe-to-toe with Ana Vileck in a match that stretched over two hours. After falling in a tiebreaker in the first set 7-6, Skrobonja rallied in the second set to earn a 6-4 win and evening the match. In the ensuing tiebreaker she went point for point but came up just short, falling 10-8.
