Aztecs earn first win of spring 2020 season

January 25, 2020 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s tennis started their Spring 2020 season off strong with a 7-0 victory over the UC Riverside Highlanders at Aztec Tennis Center Saturday. The victory over the Highlanders is the Aztecs’ second-straight season-opening sweep, last besting Sacramento State 7-0 to open the 2019 season.

The Aztec duos swept all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the dual. Sophomore Alicia Melosch and junior Nnena Nadozie opened the day with a 6-1 dominating victory over the Highlanders’ Tia Elpusan and Sara Khattab. Senior Mia Smith and junior Abbie Mulbarger claimed the doubles point for the Aztecs with a 6-1 triumph over Mahli Silpachai and Sofia Lazzaroni. Freshman Julia Jordan and junior transfer Tamara Arnold recorded their first doubles win of the spring season, besting Lindsey Gelinas and Lauren Wolfe 6-4.

In singles action, freshman Cécile Morin put away fourth seed Elpusan 6-1, 6-1 for her first collegiate victory, while fellow freshman Jordan followed suit, besting fifth seed Pham 6-3, 6-0. With the 3-0 advantage, Arnold drubbed top-seeded Silpachai to secure the dual victory for the Aztecs with a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Also logging wins for the Aztecs were sophomore Agustina Rimoldi Godoy (vs. Lazzaroni, 6-2, 6-1), Nadozie (vs. Shama, 6-1, 6-2) and Melosch (vs. Gelinas 6-3, 6-4).

THE NOTE

The Aztecs logged their ninth-straight spring season-opening victory, a streak dating back to the 2012-13 season.
