SDSU WOMEN'S TENNIS WINS FOUR FINALS ON SUNDAY

The Aztecs had a doubles team, and three singles players win the finals of their flights on Sunday

November 13, 2022 (San Diego/Las Vegas) - San Diego State women’s tennis won four finals matches on Sunday split between both the Watanabe Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada and while hosting the SDSU Fall Classic II. The Aztecs had a doubles pair and three singles players win the finals of their respective flights.



SDSU Fall Classic II – San Diego, Calif.

The Aztecs kicked off the day with a two doubles teams in action. Cecile Morin and Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer took part in the black flight final for SDSU, but fell to Rachel Wagner and Lu Chen of UC San Diego, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, Tamara Arnold and Rania Azziz earned a win, running out 6-4 winners in their match. The win was their second of the tournament as a pairing.

 

As for singles play, Arnold earned another title for the Aztecs. In her match against Kelly Leung of UC San Diego, Arnold earned a dominate straight-sets win 6-4, 6-2 to complete her run through the field. Arnold won a total of five matches over the course of the weekend between both doubles and singles play. In the other singles match, Morin went back-and-forth with Lucy Lu of Minnesota, falling in the first set 3-6, before winning the second set 7-5, but came up just short in the final set losing 4-6.

 

Watanabe Classic – Las Vegas, Nev.

Over in Las Vegas, the Aztecs earned four wins on Sunday. In doubles play Alicia Melosch and Andreea Velcea won their doubles match over Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao of UNLV, to earn the tournament crown. Additionally, Dariya Detkovskaya and Andjela Skrobonja won in their consolidation match for the second day in a row with a 6-2 win over Samantha Mannix/Marisa Schmidt of Iowa.

 

As for singles play, Skrobonja continued her hot start at San Diego State by winning her flight final over Anastasia Goncharova of Utah in straight sets. The Aztecs newcomer won 6-4, 6-1 to earn the title. Detkovskaya also earned a win in her match in the consolation bracket, picking up a 6-4, 603 win over Vipasha Mehra of Iowa.  Melosch battled back-and-forth with Marcela Lopez of Utah but ultimately came up just short, and fell 3-6, 4-6. Velcea also went point-for-point with Salsa Aher of UNLV, but fell in the end in her match as well 2-6m 4-6.

 

UP NEXT: The Aztecs return to action in the spring of 2023 when they start their dual meet season at USC on January 23rd.
