November 27, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State true freshman Tariq Thompson (San Diego/St. Augustine HS) has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the first career weekly honor for Thompson.

Thompson had eight tackles (six solo), a career-high-tying two interceptions, a career-high two pass breakups and a tackle for loss in the Aztecs’ 35-10 win over New Mexico on Friday. Thompson became the fifth FBS player this year with multiple interceptions in multiple games and the only freshman on that list.

Thompson backed a defense that held the Lobos to under 100 yards rushing for the first time since Sept. 15, 2012 at Texas Tech (84 yards) and forced seven three and outs in 13 drives. His eight-plus tackle game and two-plus interception contest was just the 11th in FBS play this season and the only one by a freshman.

On the season, Thompson has 54 tackles (39 solo), five interceptions, including an 83-yard return for a touchdown, three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, one forced fumble one fumble recovery and two quarterback hurries.

The Aztecs will find out their bowl destination next Sunday (Dec. 3).
