March 20, 2009 (El Cajon)—Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 221 members have ratified their contract with the County of San Diego. Voting on the contract took place March 17-19, and of the members who voted, 89% voted to ratify the contract.

The new contract will extend the currently existing contract by two years and will include a 2% raise in 2010, and a 5% increase to the health care flex credit in 2010 and 2011. The contract also creates a new retirement tier for new county employees, which will not impact current employees.

“Our members felt that due to the harsh economic realities the county is facing, the most prudent approach was to extend our contract,” SEIU Local 221 President Sharon-Frances Moore said. “The public relies on the essential services provided by our members and we wanted to ensure that those services are preserved.”
