Update 6:30 p.m.   Approximately one-third of students stayed home today as a result of a rumored school shooting.  According to posts by parents and students at Facebook and 10 News, some authorities were aware of the potential threats on Friday.  Some parents have questioned why the District did not notify parents on Friday, why a parent meeting has not been called, and whether adequate steps have been taken to protect student safety.

December 13, 2010 (Lakeside) – A parent of two teens at El Capitan High School notified East County Magazine late last night that there is a “major rumor running that there is going to be a shooting tomorrow at the school.” The source said the shooting was rumored to be planned in retaliation for the death of former El Capitan student Christopher Carioscia, whose body was found at Barona last week following discovery of his burned car. The parent said Carioscia also went by the name Chris Younghusband. Law enforcement officials have previously stated that Carioscia had a history of drug problems.

Detective Jason Rouse at the Santee Sheriff’s substation confirmed, “We have received reports from several parents. At this point we have not been able to identify a source other than there’s lots of kids on Facebook saying they’ve heard about this.”

Asked what steps are being taken to assure safety of students, Rouse replied, “We have been in touch with the school and the community resource officers. They are taking appropriate steps to assure safety of students, and we are going to respond as though this is a credible threat, even though we don’t know if it is or not.”

An East County Magazine photographer drove past the school as students were arriving and saw one Sheriff car parked at the campus (photo). Rouse said there will be additional patrols throughout the day and that undercover officers will also be on campus.

The parent told ECM that some jittery parents are keeping students home today, but that her children will be in school because “they have perfect attendance.”

Grossmont Union High School District spokesperson Catherine Martin said, "The school is aware of unsubstantiated rumors. We're working closely with law enforcement. Anytime we hear rumors of a threat we immediately conduct an investigation with our law enforcement partners. There will be an additional law enforcement presence on campus today."

Help

First of all my blessings and prayers go out to Cristophers family and loved ones. I know what it is like to have some one very dear and close to you taken away the same way. But blaming the first person you see is not going to bring him back! I am from Barona and knew Christopher well he was sooo nice! And it really bothers me that everyone wants to assume how he was killed but no one knows! If he was alive do you think he would want everyone saying they are gonna kill two native boys for Christopher. Or that they have snipers in the hills. I know it is hare but honestly everyone has to be patient and wait to find our the real results. I mean i heard tons of rumors, that he was a really bad druggie, that the mexican mafia did it beecause he owed them drug money, That the white people did and are trying to blame the natives and so many more. And yes Barona is cooperating the best we can. All I know is everyone from Barona has nothing but nice things to say about him I dont know one person that knew him and didnt like him. Well I pray that they find the person responsible for thins and lock that person up for good!!! Native or not!!! GOD BLESS YOU CHRISTOPER SAY HI TO MY GRANDMOTHER PLEASE! -Barona Tribal Member

Justice for Chris

Maybe if the police would do something about this horrible crime and maybe if Barona would cooperate with local police this would not be an issue. The reservation is not a safe place...our laws do not protect us up there. I will never go to that casino again. I refuse to give a penny of my money to a bunch of people who cover up for crimes that their own commit. It is sad, and I wish the news would stop saying that Chris was involved in drugs. This is irrelevant he did not die from an overdose...he was murdered! He was a good kid who lost his way and he did not deserve this and he deserves justice!

None

The part they are leaving out is that the Sheriffs dept and School are well aware that a group of Caucasian kids went up to Barona last weekend to visit the person that they think is responsible for Chris's death , they had weapons and where going to retaliate. Upon arrival at said Barona residence the native American kid's father came out with a shotgun and fired shots at the kids as they where exiting the area as fast as they could.....

My kids attend the school and showed up yesterday to see 3-4 white kids putting on bullet proof vests in the parking lot. They did not feel good about being there so we let them come home. Also the police presence was overwhelming in the morning 5-6 cops roaming campus 3-4 cop cars outside in the parking lot ...but when my kids left after first period they where all gone except a couple in the parking lot. (My son said he saw one undercover officer).

Christopher

Not all from Barona are guilty of this crime. My daughter was friends with him. We wish we could have done something. I want to know who did this JUST AS MUCH as his parents. It makes me sick to be associated with some one who HIDES behind a whole community that is innocent. Whom ever committed this crime will be caught eventually. There is NO statute of limitations on murder. May you spend the rest of your free time how ever long that is, looking behind your back.

What is the governing board going to do to make campuses safe?

Come on now Mr. Kelly and and friends, please protect our students. How can you sit by when your campuses become war zones?
Please call a news conference to tell us how many other drug related killings have been threatened at your schools.
