STATE AUDITOR SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR 2020 CITIZENS REDISTRICTING COMMISSION

Update July 25:  The State has announced it does not have enough women or Latino applicants and is actively seeking more applicants to assure a balanced commisson.

July 21, 2019 (San Diego) - Concerned about the political gerrymandering that is the norm across much of the United States?  

You can do your part to make California different by applying for one of the 14 seats on the 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission.

State Auditor Elaine M. Howle announced this week that more than 5,500 Californians have submitted an application, with the final deadline less than three weeks away on Aug. 9.

“I am pleased to see that more than 5,500 Californians are ready to be a part of making real change,” said Howle. “These applicants are making a choice—to ensure their community has a voice in the next redistricting process.”

Every 10 years, after the federal census, states must redraw the lines for Congressional and state districts. Beginning in 2010, because of a ballot measure, this duty was shifted from the state Legislature to an independent citizens commission composed of five Democrats, five Republicans, and four who are members of neither major party. The process is under the supervision of the state auditor.

Applications to serve can be made online at shapecaliforniasfuture.auditor.ca.gov.

“We encourage all Californians to apply for this once-in-a-decade opportunity and be part of the team that will be drawing new political districts that define where our Congressional and state representatives come from,” said Howle.
