June 26, 2012 (Sacramento)—If you owe a hefty tax bill to the state, time to pay up or pay the consequences is running out. Starting July 1, California will suspend most occupational, professional and driver’s licenses for people with the highest unpaid state tax bills.

Passed last year, Assembly 1424 takes effect July 1, 2012.  The new law targets the 500 delinquent taxpayers with the highest unpaid state tax debts.

The measure aims to prod scofflaws into paying up—or face public embarrassment along with loss of driving privileges and professional licensure.
