January 4, 2017 (San Diego) – Each year, talented students from San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory's most advanced level Ovation, and intermediate level Showcase programs compete in our solo Concerto Competitions.   In addition to cash scholarship awards, the winners of both competitions gain the opportunity to perform as featured soloists in future San Diego Youth Symphony concerts.

In June of 2017, the co-winners of the Ovation Concerto Competition will perform full concertos, instead of single movements for the first time, backed by their orchestras.

This year, two talented and dedicated students were recognized for the top award during the Ovation Concerto Competition held in October. They will both be featured soloists during the Ovation Spring concert, to be held Sunday, June 11 at 4:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall.

"Performing full concertos is demanding and is usually only a requirement of college students. They require a high level of musicianship, endurance, artistry, professional-level performance ability, and extreme poise and confidence.  It really is a notable accomplishment to successfully learn a full concerto let alone perform with a full orchestra. We are really proud of these students and the contribution they make to our ensembles," says Dr. Sidney Yin, Associate Director of Conservatory Programs.

Erica Hwang, Ovation competition co-winner and concertmistress of Symphony Orchestra, SDYS' most advanced ensemble, will perform Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, by Samuel Barber.

Christine Kim, Ovation competition co-winner and principal flute in Symphony Orchestra, will perform Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in D Major, Op. 283, by Carl Reinecke.

Ms. Hwang and Ms. Kim will both perform at the Ovation Spring Concert to be held June 11, 2017 at 4:00pm, at the Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall.

Sara Maxman, Showcase competition winner and principal violin in our intermediate Sinfonia orchestra will perform Concerto No. 3 in F major, Op. 8, RV 293 - Allegro by Antonio Vivaldi.  She will perform at the Winter Inspiration & Showcase Concert, Saturday, March 12 at 6:00pm at Poway Center for the Performing Arts.

The level of musical artistry, confidence, leadership and the demands of performing live as soloists illustrate the tremendous achievement of these young musicians.  Winners of SDYS Concerto Competitions, who are often principals or assistant principals in their instrument section, are examples of the astonishing skill level attained through SDYS' commitment to developing students' personal musical achievement.
