June 21, 2023 (Spring Valley) –Sweetwater Regional Park in Spring Valley will soon be expanded from 300 acres to 490 acres, helping the county to complete the 11-mile Sweetwater Loop Trail around Sweetwater Reservoir.

The $5.3 million acquisition for Sweetwater from the new Ranch Land Co. has been approved unanimously by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. This will help protect coastal sage scrub habitat as well as threatened or endangered species, such as Bell’s Vireo birds.

Supervisors also approved $2.8 million to purchase 425 acres to increase the Mount Olympus County Preserve in Pala-Pauma and Rainbow. This will increase the preserve to more than 1,200 acres including habitat for mountain lions, deer, and other species, according to Shauni Lyles, communications specialist with San Diego County.
