July 29, 2014 (La Mesa)--Firefighters from La Mesa’s Station 12 called police yesterday at 5:51 p.m. to report finding a man in their secure parking area who was burglarizing their personal vehicles.  As La Mesa Police officers responded, the suspect ran away and hid in the garage of a nearby home – where he began stealing items in the garage.

The resident called police as the suspect fled.  Officers set up a perimeter.  Officers called for air support and San Diego Police Department’s helicopter responded, broadcasting announcements of the suspect’s description.

A neighbor heard the announcements and immediately called La Mesa Police Department  to report witnessing the suspect run into a backyard.  Officers entered the backyard and found the suspect hiding under a vehicle.  They arrested 29-year-old Leu Brent Edwards of Bonita, who is charged with vehicular and residential burglary.

All items stolen from the firefighters’ vehicles were recovered.
