March 29, 2019 (El Cajon) – Surveillance video, a cell phone video and witness interviews are providing new details on a man shot dead yesterday in the 1300 block of East Main St. in El Cajon.

The evidence indicates the man was likely trying to burglarize and then carjack a vehicle, says Lt. Royal Bates.  When an off-duty security guard reported the vehicle break-in, the suspect tried to “violently attack” the guard.  The guard told police he then pepper-sprayed the suspect, but it had no effect.

The guard locked himself in his vehicle to avoid being assaulted by the suspect, who then tried to break two windows in the security guard’s vehicle before the guard was able to drive way.

The suspect then directed his attention to the owner of the vehicle he had initially burglarized. When the suspect advanced toward the victim, the victim/vehicle owner shot and killed him.

“The victim is cooperating with the investigation,” Lt. Bates says, adding that it is not believed that the victim knew the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call El Cajon Police.

Frightening

El Cajon seems to be getting more wild every year. The things I see and experience routinely can be unnerving, but this level of violence is the type of thing once reserved mostly for big cities. People high on drugs, or alcohol have the potential to do unacceptable things.
