April 12, 2011 (San Diego)--While the Spring semester comes closer to an end and daunting final exams creep up on students at SDSU, an exciting project is underway to build a new, sustainable Aztec Center.

During March 2010, students voted in favor of a $94 per semester fee increase, from which funding would be provided to tear down the current Aztec Center and rebuild this improved facility. Currently, Aztec Center is not able to service the growing number of students who use the facility, and alternative plans to renovate the structure because of imminent safety concerns would actually cost the University more than it would to rebuild it in its entirety.

This 200,891 gross square foot building will include healthy dining options, a fitness center and bowling alley, office space, an Aztec market and much more. In addition, there’s good news for our local economy, since new student services bring many new jobs.

To tie in this new structure with the rest of the campus, the architecture will exhibit a Mission Revival design, with archways and balconies similar to surrounding buildings on campus. Among the more exciting and modern design aspects that the building will have to offer include roof top solar paneling and vegetation, moving San Diego State University towards a more “green” and sustainable future.

The construction for this new Aztec Center is scheduled to begin in June of 2011 and is estimated to last 20-24 months. More information about the project can be found at http://www.as.sdsu.edu/new_aztec_center/ .
