November 4, 2011 (San Diego's East County) -- Lakeside River Park Conservancy will host a Sustainable Homes Tour on Saturday, November 5. The tour includes about 10 sites on tour, including many in East County.

These homes have a variety of sustainable applications from the construction of the homes, products, landscape and conservation. The variation from new build construction to renovations of older homes provides a broad display of opportunities and ideas for the next home owner touring the sites.

Tour homes include:

Gonzales Residence. Poway:  New Build. Straw Bale construction, water recycle, recycled glass and steel, bamboo flooring. Find how they limited their construction waste to only two dumpsters!

Metzler-Wehunt Residence, Lakeside: Renovated. The list goes on in this house: Solar panels for water and electric, water barrels, low-flow appliances, American clay walls, daylighting, whole house fan (great feature inland), blue jean insulation and more.

The Hanger, Santee
: An old airplane hanger renovated into an office. This amazing transformation used recycled materials from airplanes, the hanger and the old spaghetti factory. There is a synergy of old and modern design coming into play. Old doors, moldings and stained glass window work with the modern and sleek design of the office space.

......and many more interesting homes! Green roofs, wind turbine, water-wise landscapes and many more great features.

Along with the tour, organizers are bringing together sustainable home vendors to showcase their products to our guests at the Fall Garden and Home Festival at Cuyamaca College. We are hoping to spark the interest by example through the homes tour and connect the home owners to the right products at the home expo.

There will be the Green Truck providing food for the day, lectures, plant sales, kids activities, live art show of how to up-cycle old furniture, and opportunity to test drive the Leaf.
