Veteran Michael Foster was hero who saved Alpine woman from burning home

October 19, 2010 – Michael Foster, a U.S. Army combat veteran who barricaded himself into his home in Alpine after firing shots at his wife this morning, has been shot by S.W.A.T. team snipers, ECM news partner 10 News reports.

Foster reportedly held a gun to his wife’s head and was holding her hostage, but she escaped. After negotiations to convince Foster to surrender failed, he came out of the home with a gun in his hand and fired multiple rounds at deputies, the Sheriff reports.  He was shot multiple times, but remained conscious when taken into custody.

But in April 2008 , Foster was a hero who rushed into a burning mobile home to rescue Deborah Carr after Carr’s boyfriend, Todd Andrew Wimler, threw caustic chemicals on her, then set her and the residence on fire.

The Alpine Sun reported that Foster was walking his dog when he heard Carr’s cries for help. In addition to saving her life, he also subdued Wimler, who was subsequently charged with attempted murder, mayhem, arson and other charges. Carr, a long-time employee at Viejas, suffered severe burns and underwent multiple surgeries, but survived.

More recently, however, Foster had psychiatric problems and was arrested last week for causing a disturbance at the Casino Inn in Alpine. ECM reported details earlier today, including an interview from a witness struck by Foster during that altercation.
