February 7, 2010 (San Diego) - Following a three-day manhunt, San Diego Police have arrested Torrance Jones, 33, and charged him with the murder of LaDonte Ellese Collins, 22. Collins and two friends had a flat tire and called for a taxi outside the Ace Budget Motel, according to authorities. When it arrived, Jones and a woman came out and tried to take the cab. An argument ensued and Jones allegedly stabbed Collins in the chest.
Jones and the woman fled the scene. Collins was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, but died shortly thereafter. The stabbing occurred in the 7000 block of El Cajon Blvd., in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego just east of La Mesa, in the pre-dawn hours Tuesday morning.
A graduate of University City Heights High School, where he played football, Collins had recently been laid off from his job in El Cajon, where he worked as a driver at C & M Relocations Systems, the Union-Tribune has reported.
Police arrested Jones yesterday in an apartment in downtown San Diego.
