March 5, 2018 (San Diego) -- On March 24th, San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program's 29th Women and Families Resource Fair will provide free legal, medical, and social services to women and families in need - on one day, under one roof.  The Fair is an annual one-day event which will be held at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, located at 404 Euclid Ave., San Diego, CA 92114, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Free refreshments will be provided.  The purpose of the Fair is to provide women and families with free access to a wide range of essential services.

Volunteer attorneys will provide free legal advice to women and families in need in the areas of family law and custody, employment law, criminal law, benefits, restraining orders, immigration, debt issues, landlord/tenant and housing issues, juvenile law and others.  Approximately 50 social services providers will be present to provide public benefits information, career counseling, child support assistance, recovery referrals, support for pregnant and postpartum women, emergency services, homeless services, preschool and other childcare programs, housing referrals, utility services, self-defense workshops and other resources.

Participants can access free flu shots and vaccinations, including the Hepatitis A vaccine.  Enrollment specialists will be present to discuss and enroll participants in Medi-Cal and Covered California.  Mental health, dental, audiology, vision, and homeless health referrals will be provided.  Family Health Center’s Mobile Medical Unit will be available to see new or existing patients at no-cost or a minimal co-pay, depending on income and existing health coverage.

There will be live music, arts and crafts, and other entertainment for children.  Children will also receive free school supplies (while supplies last).

The first Fair was held in 1990, and was inspired by Stand Down, a similar weekend project held in Balboa Park each year to serve veterans.  The Fair was initially called SDVLP's Women's Resource Fair and focused on serving homeless, battered, and indigent women and children.  Based on a year-long community needs assessment, SDVLP recently expanded the Fair to include all families in need.  The Fair is entirely funded by donations from local law firms, businesses, and individuals, along with grants from the Lawyers Club of San Diego Fund for Justice and the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club.  Over 150 volunteers are involved in putting on this annual one day event.  For more information about SDVLP's Women and Families Resource Fair, please visit www.sdvlp.org/women-and-families-resource-fair/.
