October 11, 2010 (Santee) – The driver of a Volkswagen that collided with a Mazda in Santee last night shortly after midnight sustained serious injuries, Sergeant Craig Johnson of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department reports.

The accident occurred on Pepper Drive at Graes Avenue. According to Sgt. Johnson, the driver of a Mazda “crossover” vehicle occupied by two adults was heading westbound on Pepper Drive. As the Mazda entered the intersection of Graves Avenue to turn southbound, the vehicle was struck by a Volkswagen “bug” traveling northbound on Graves Avenue.

The driver and sole occupant of the Volkswage was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by Santee Fire Department and Medic personnel. He sustained major facial fractures around the right eye, a possible brain injury, a lacerated liver, fractures to both arms, and deep lacerations to both legs. “It does not appear the driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision,” Johnson said.
