January 10, 2024 (El Cajon) – Wal Mart has announced that it will not renew its lease for the Walmart store in the Parkway Plaza shopping mall in El Cajon. The company plans to close the store on February 9.

The decision was made due to the store not meeting financial expectations and due to being unable to reach a mutual lease renewal with the property manager, a Walmart source informed ECM.  The company hopes to transfer most of the 232 people employed at the store to another nearby Walmart location.

The company employes thousands of people locally, including at two other Walmart stores in El Cajon, as well as a Walmart nearby at Grossmont Center in La Mesa, and other stores across the San Diego region.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our store at 605 Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon,” says Brian K. Little, global communications director for Walmart Corporate Affairs. ”We look forward to serving them at one of our two other stores in the community, on walmart.com and through delivery to their home or business.”

Walmart’s closure will leave Parkway Plaza with only one remaining department store, JC Penney. The site of the former Macy’s remains vacant.  The space formerly occupied by Sears now houses a furniture store.  The site long ago occupied by Mervyn’s is now a sporting goods store.

Walmart also announced closure of a store in Sherman Heights, but has indicated that no other stores in San Diego County are expected to shut down.

The retail giant operates nearly 5,000 stores nationwide and over 300 in California, including Sam’s Club stores, with dozens of stores in San Diego County.
