August 11, 2017 (El Cajon) – This Saturday, El Cajon hosts a free e-waste and paper shredding event. Coming up this week are the Heroes in concert, and Cajon Speedway Night downtown.  Other upcoming activities include the Alley Cat art walk and an Air Group One breakfast featuring World War II aerial crew heroes sharing their historic memories.  Scroll down for these events and more – all in El Cajon.

FREE E-Waste Recycling & Document Shredding Event in Downtown El Cajon This Weekend!

Urban Corps of San Diego County (Urban Corps) will partner with Waste Management and the City of El Cajon for a Free Electronic Waste Collection event. The goal is to divert as many pounds of E-Waste as possible from the landfill by offering a free drop off event in the City of El Cajon.

Date:          Saturday, August 12

Time:         9 a.m. to 2 p.m.   - E-Waste Drop Off

         9 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Paper Shredding

Location: 251 N. Magnolia Avenue - Parking lot west of the El Cajon Police Department

This event will provide City of El Cajon residents the opportunity to easily dispose of confidential documents in an environmentally safe manner.

The event is free to City of El Cajon residents and proof of address is required.  Residents can bring up to five (5) standard size storage boxes of documents per residence.  Documents must be free from binders or binder clips.  Stapled papers are acceptable and all storage boxes will be returned to residents.  All hard drives received will be shredded.

Materials Urban Corps of San Diego County does not accept: Hazardous wastes/liquids, loose alkaline batteries, light bulbs and glass, fluorescent lamps, tires, wood speakers, household appliances (washers, dryers, stoves, air conditioner, refrigerators, microwaves, satellite dishes, space heaters, irons, hair dryers, vacuums, and power hand tools). It’s Country Music at the Next Dinner & a Concert

It’s Modern Country music at the next Dinner & a Concert, this coming Friday, August 11, with Patrick Trampus!  The concert is 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Prescott Promenade, 201 E. Main Street in Downtown El Cajon.  Don’t miss the 2017 season of “Dinner & a Concert” Friday nights, now through September 29. Dine at one of many great restaurants downtown, or bring your own picnic and lawn chairs.  These free concerts are brought to you by the Downtown El Cajon Business Partners. Cajon Speedway Featured at Cajon Classic Cruise

It’s “Cajon Speedway Family Nite” at the next Cajon Classic Cruise car show on Wednesday, August 16.  See all the amazing classic vehicles during the 2017 Season of Cajon Classic Cruise Car Shows every Wednesday night, now through October 25, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  This popular event is held in the 200 block of E. St. Madeleine’s Haute with Heart Fashion Show

Tickets are still available for the 40th Annual Haute with Heart Fashion Show benefiting St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center.

Date: Saturday, August 19

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Location: Hilton San Diego Bay Front Hotel, 1 Park Boulevard, San Diego

Haute with Heart Fashion Show highlights professional models and the community of St. Madeleine’s dressed in the latest fashions on the runway.  This event also features fabulous boutique shopping, live and silent auctions, opportunity drawings, luncheon, a heartwarming performance from the Center’s students, and free parking!

Nominate a Woman Leader for the Women in Leadership Luncheon

The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 15th Annual Women in Leadership Luncheon.  Nominations are due by Friday, August 25. These awards provide an opportunity to honor women in San Diego County that have demonstrated exemplary character, integrity and outstanding leadership, not only in their field, but in their community. ALL nominees will be recognized at the luncheon held at the Town & Country Resort Hotel on Friday, September 22, 2017. Nomination forms can be found on the website at www.eastcountychamber.org. Air Group One Breakfast

Commemorative Air Force - Air Group One invites you to attend their monthly breakfast meeting on Saturday, August 26, at 9 a.m., at their hangar, 1921 N. Marshall Ave. Hangar #13.  Guest speakers will include Heroic WWII Veterans speaking about their experiences. Brave aircrews that flew B-24s in England, over the D-Day invasion, Iwo Jima, the Berlin Airlift, and more. This is an excellent opportunity to hear from the heroes that were there, tell it in their own words. These men represent a piece of WII living history that is rapidly disappearing. Support Local Youth - The All FORE R.E.C. Golf Tournament – Sign Up Your Team!

Golfers - register now for this fun event! The 19th Annual All Fore R.E.C. Benefit Golf Tournament, Dinner & Auction, is Friday, September 15, at Sycuan Golf Resort, 3007 Dehesa Road. Check-in is at 10:00 a.m. and the Shotgun Start is at 12:00 p.m.  A box lunch is included, and a buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m.  This event is hosted by the City of El Cajon Recreation Department and Crest Kiwanis Club.  All proceeds directly support activities that develop youth and provide positive choices through youth activity scholarships, youth sports, recreation classes and after-school programs. Alley Cat Art Walk in September

Alley Cat Art Walk is back by popular demand in Downtown El Cajon!

Date: Friday, September 15

Time: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Location: In the alley between Rea Avenue and E. Main Street

An evening of art while enjoying food, drink and music in the alley. Visit local art galleries and businesses to collect stamps and be eligible to win prizes! This event showcases the local art district and other local businesses and restaurants on E. Main Street and Rea Avenue between Magnolia Avenue and Sulzfeld Drive. Arts and craft vendors will have displays and products for sale in the alley way, also an opportunity drawing and live Bluegrass/Jazz music. Nominations Still Being Accepted for Veteran of the Year

The City of El Cajon Veterans Commission presents a “Veteran of the Year” Award, recognizing those who go above and beyond in serving their community through their leadership abilities and/or community service in El Cajon, making a big impact on those they serve.  Final selections will be based on dedication, commitment, and demonstrated impact of those served.  If you see, hear, or know of a veteran who has gone the extra mile to improve the quality of life in the community, please take this opportunity to acknowledge and reward that effort.

The following criteria is required for an individual to receive this special award:

  • Been honorably discharged from the U.S. Military or National Guard –documentation required
  • City of El Cajon resident
  • Made significant contributions to the community since their discharge
  • Not a current Veterans Commissioner

To nominate someone, complete a nomination form and return it to the City of El Cajon Recreation Department. The Veterans Commission will make a final selection and notify the award recipient and his/her nominators by the last week in October.

The individual selected for this award will be recognized on November 11, 2017, during the Veterans Day Celebration at the Veterans Memorial in front of City Hall.  They will also be presented with a “Veteran of the Year” award plaque and proclamation during the El Cajon City Council Meeting on December 12.  For more information, please contact the City of El Cajon Recreation Department at (619) 441-1754.

Special City Council Public Forum In October

Residents are invited to attend a public forum to share and listen to great ideas that will help shape the City Council’s priorities for El Cajon.

Location: El Cajon City Council Chamber, 200 Civic Center Way.

August 25 - Friday closure for El Cajon City offices.  Please go to www.cityofelcajon.us for a full calendar of office hours for City offices during 2017.

August 17 - Stop By El Cajon Farmers’ Market - Every Thursday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  The Farmers’ Market also offers a wide variety of fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables, fresh baked bread, vendors, music and more. September 4 - Labor Day - All City offices will be closed in observance.  Recreation Centers and the pool are also closed.  Parks are open normal hours.

September 12 and 26 - El Cajon City Council Meetings are at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., as needed.  Meetings are held in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center Way.
