April 16, 2011 (El Cajon)--A female student claims that she was sexually assaulted by a stranger while entering her vehicle in a parking lot at Grossmont College on Tuesday evening, April 12 around 9:45 p.m.

The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Public Safety office received a second-hand report of the assault from a person to whom the victim had reportedly revealed the assault. El Cajon Police has since verified the report with the victim.

Students, faculty and staff in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District were sent an email message notifying them about the incident, in keeping with the federal Jeanne Clery Act for campus safety. A report was also provided to El Cajon Police Department, the District advised media on Thursday.

“El Cajon Police located the adult female student,” Lt. Mark Coit of the El Cajon Police reports. According to Coit, the woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted by an unknown person. No description of the suspect has been provided by the campus or police.

A source close to the investigation said the victim is Middle Eastern and has been reluctant to cooperate with authorities because in her culture, “it is considered shameful” to speak about being sexually assaulted.

Lt. Coit indicated that the student “has disclosed limited details of the assault to police and this investigation is continuing.”
