August 14, 2010 (Spring Valley) – A boy, 10, called 911 after his mother was attacked at their home in the 1000 block of Celestial Waters Drive in Spring Valley. Sheriff’s deputies found the woman, Avitha Chua Rafael, 28, dead of traumatic injuries. A search was mounted for the boy’s father, Krisanto Barquia Jopanda, 33, from whom Rafael had obtained a court protective order from in July.
Jopanda was last seen leaving the residence in a silver Nissan Altima. Last night, his body was discovered in a canyon in Presidio Park near his parked car. He is believed to have killed himself, according to Sheriff’s officials.
A neighbor, Judy Rich, told ECM news partner 10 News that the community was a “very quiet, reserved neighborhood…You can trust your kids to walk around, we thought.” Another neighbor, Nick Horn, called the news “shocking.”
The boy was taken to a Sheriff’s substation to be interviewed.
