August 2, 2017 (La Mesa) – A kitchen fire at Wong’s Golden Palace, 7126 University Avenue, caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to the restaurant.  The Chinese restaurant had celebrated its golden anniversary in 2016, its 50th year in business.

The blaze began around 11:20 Tuesday morning, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue spokesman Mark Casey.

Crews from Heartland and San Diego Fire to about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire, after arriving to find flames shooting through the building’s roof.

The business is expected to be closed a month or more to repair the kitchen and other structural damage, although the dining room and cocktail lounge had only minor smoke damage, ECM news partner 10 News reports.
