Doyle Dykes and the Kruger Brothers to perform

June 1, 2010 (El Cajon) – The East County EDC Foundation has teamed up with Taylor Guitar, Deering Banjo, and famed musical entertainers to raise funds for industrial arts programs in our region—such as a guitar-making course that gives students hands-on experience crafting musical instruments. Taylor and Deering, based in East County, are among the top instrument makers in the world.

On Friday, June 11 at 7 p.m., Doyles Dyles and the Kruger Brothers will headline a benefit concert at the Cuyamaca College Communications Arts Center, where outstanding shop students from each of East County’s high schools and community colleges will also be honored. A live auction will include a Taylor guitar, a Deering banjo, and a 1923 Ford "T Bucket" Roadster—crafted by Valhalla High School's Auto Technology/Design/Fabrication Program. A raffle will also be held, including a chance to win a second Taylor guitar.

Live entertainment has been donated by world famous performers Doyle Dykes http://www.doyledykes.com and The Kruger Brothers http://www.krugerbrothers.com.

Challenges facing shop teachers have been difficult, said Larry Martinsen of Valhalla High School. “Most of the equipment is more than 30 years old,” he said, adding that facilities have remained the same and budgets are so meager that teachers have been left to scrounge for donations of supplies and funds. “The thought of doing anything new and dynamic was out of the question,” he noted.

Then came along Bob Taylor, Diane Magagna, and the East County Economic Development Council Foundation, he noted. “For 10 years now the money and resources they have supplied to programs and teachers in our District [GUHSD] have made a tremendous difference.” A guitar manufacturing class has been implemented on select campuses along with upgrades in equipment and supplies. Those changes have brought “renewed enthusiasm, meaningful program improvements, and pride in student work that is unprecedented in our District,” Martinsen said.

Cuyamaca College is located at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in El Cajon. Tickets cost $50 and may be purchased at www.EastCountyEDC.org or call (619)258-3670.
