July 2, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – San Diegans for Open Government (SDOG), a government watchdog group, filed a lawsuit in January against the Grossmont Union High School District and Superintendent Tim Glover.  It alleges that the defendants “intentionally used personal e-mail accounts and text-messaging devices (e.g., mobile phones and tablets) to communicate about illegal political activity they were conducting—without being subject to public scrutiny—on Measure BB appearing on the November ballot.”

UBER DRIVER INJURED IN DRIVE-BY SHOOTING IN SPRING VALLEY

July 1, 2017 (Spring Valley ) – Two vehicles were struck in a drive-by shooting this evening near the intersection of Jamacha Road and Gillespie Drive in the La Presa area of Spring Valley, sending the driver of a white Ford Focis to the hospital, NBC 7 reports.

  Witnesses reported hearing 10 to 11 shots around 5:17 p.m.  A witness told Fox 5 that he saw the white car hit a corner and rushed to help.  “I unlocked the door and he was riddled with bullets on his right side. The right side of his passenger door was riddled with bullets,”  the witness told Fox 5, adding that he used the driver’s phone to speak with a 911 dispatcher and applied pressure to the driver’s wounds until emergency personnel arrived.

July 1, 2017 (Washington D.C.) – The U.S. House of Representatives has passed House Resolutions 3003 and 3004, measures aimed at cracking down on undocumented immigrants.  The measures, which punish sanctuary cities and states by withholding key funds, also boost penalties for certain immigrants who reenter the U.S. illegally after being deported three or more times.

ARSON ARREST IN TRAILS FIRE

July 1, 2017 (Escondido) – CAL FIRE law enforcement officers on Thursday arrested Jose Duran Aguirre, 31, a transient in Escondido, on arson charges.  He is accused of recklessly setting fire to a forest land and for discharging an emergency signaling device in a manner other than the permitted use.

July 1, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – Manuel Miguel Moreno, a Lemon Grove resident who was raised in Santee, passed away June 26th at Grossmont Hospital of injuries from a car crash eight months ago in Ramona. He was surrounded by his family.

GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES OVER $64,000 FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

July 1, 2017 (San Diego) — Local nonprofits United Through Reading (UTR) and the Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) hosted a first-ever joint golf tournament on June 23rd to support military and their families through the challenges of deployment. The tournament raised over $64,000 while celebrating the courage and strength of local San Diego military and their families, also highlighting key roles these organizations play in their lives.

July 1, 2017 (San Diego) - With the Fourth of July holiday quickly approaching, CAL FIRE is reminding everyone to do their part to prevent fires and injuries caused by fireworks. Two out of five fires on the 4th of July are caused by fireworks, more than any other cause of fires. The majority of these incidents are related to either the use of illegal fireworks or state-approved fireworks that are used incorrectly.  All Fireworks are illegal in San Diego County including state-approved fireworks.
