SUICIDES INCREASE 20% COUNTYWIDE

September 10, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - Suicides are up 20% in San Diego County.  That’s one of the startling findings in the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council’s Report to the Community.  The suicide rate steadily increased from 2008 to 2013. Last year, 14 suicides occurred for every 100,000 residents in San Diego County. That rate is also  20 percent higher than the average for the entire state of California.

Padres host “strike out stroke” night May 10

Stroke kills over 1,000 San Diegans every year.

May 8, 2014 (San Diego) - The good news is that the number of stroke deaths has decreased by more than 30 percent in the past decade. Local health officials aim to keep driving the number of deaths down and make San Diego a stroke-free zone by raising awareness about the warning signs and symptoms of stroke.

December 23, 2011 -- (San Diego County) -- Give your child the joy of opening an additional holiday present and give yourself peace of mind if you get them a bike, skateboard or scooter. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Rady Children’s Hospital and Racers and Chasers are teaming up to remind people that those gifts need to be accompanied by a properly-fitted helmet, as well as wrist guards and elbow and knee pads if it’s a skateboard.

New Study Reveals Obesity Rate Drops: “Live Well” program credited with positive results

November 11, 2011 (San Diego) -- It appears San Diego County children and adolescents are putting down the sodas and Twinkies and becoming more physically active.

A new study conducted by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA) revealed that the obesity rate among local children dropped by nearly four percent.
