Never walk alone

Everyone has a phone, call a friend as an escort or to get a ride home or to your destination. College students likely have money, maybe some jewelry or other items that would attract criminals.

Good advice and here's more for SDSU students:

You can call campus police and request a free escort if you must walk alone at night on campus.

If you have to walk off campus alone, at least carry pepper spray and a compressed-air "shriek alarm."  Another trick I learned when I worked at the state capitol and there were assaults on women going on in the capitol park is to carry your keys with one protruding between every finger; if attacked you can use it like a set of very sharp brass knuckles.

If someone grabs your arm, kick the assailant's shins  or stomp back on his ankle/instep and twist your arm to force them to lose their grasp,  Then scream and run.  I actually had to do this once when I was attacked in Sacramento.

There are many other tecniques. I strongly recommend a self-defense class for every woman and teen.
