March 20, 2024 (Jersey City, NJ) -- Stephen Lewis Weber died March 17 surrounded by family at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey.
 
Weber was born on St. Patrick’s Day, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts. After the death of his father, when Weber was 9 years old, his mother moved Weber and his two younger brothers, John and Roger, to her hometown of Stony Ridge, Ohio. She built a home next to Weber’s grandparent’s farm. They would prove to be excellent role models, along with Weber’s three uncles and their families.

September 12, 2023 (San Diego) -- A striking black and yellow beetle called the goldspotted oak borer has been decimating oak trees in Southern California for more than 20 years, including on the ancestral lands of the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians on Palomar Mountain. The insects’ larvae burrow into bark, increasing drought stress on the trees.

March 24, 2015 (San Diego) –San Diego State University has issued a community safety alert warning that a man armed with a black handgun tried to kidnap a female student Monday night at 10:50 p.m. and force her into a vehicle.

WOMAN REPORTS ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING NEAR SDSU

 

December 15, 2014 (San Diego) – San Diego State has issued an alert to students following a report of an attempted kidnapping.  A female students reports that while walking home in the 6300 block of Alvarado Road on December 12th at 10 p.m., two men grabbed her by the arm and a third pushed her from behind toward an SUV.

November 24, 2014  (San Diego) Updated November 25, 2014—A group calling itself “Concerned students of San Diego State University” has sent a letter to SDSU’s president, state legislators and Governor Jerry Brown urging an end to “rape culture.”

There have been at least seven reported rapes on campus in the fall 2014 semester, including five at fraternities, but no one has been arrested in any of those cases.

COUNTY PARTNERS WITH SDSU TO MAKE EMERGENCY ALERTS GO VIRAL

 

October 23, 2014 (San Diego)—The County of San Diego is teaming up with San Diego State University to make emergency alerts go viral over Twitter. 

The project is the brainchild of SDSU geography professor Ming Hsiang-Tsou, who directors the Center for Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age on campus.  Thanks to a million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation, Tsou has been studying how the County’s Office of Emergency Services can spread alerts about disasters such as earthquakes or wildfires quickly and to targeted areas—even if traditional means of communications such as phone lines aren’t working.
