Will the AI bubble burst? How AI generators are remaking reality

March 16, 2026 (San Diego) — According to Businessman and Attorney Andrew Yang, “The jobpocalypse is here.”
 
He expressed fears that Artificial Intelligence predicts a staggering 99 percent unemployment in the next five years.
 
As of early 2026, AI’s impact on aggregate unemployment remains subtle, with roughly 90 percent of executives reporting little significant change in headcount due to AI since late 2022. However, significant disruption is emerging in specific and high exposure entry-level white collar roles, potentially causing a 0.1 percent to 0.5 percent rise in unemployment.
 
While overall employment remains stable, young workers in AI-exposed fields have seen higher unemployment rates. While many experts see only moderate disruption, some projections suggest that AI could displace 6 to 7 percent of the workforce, with potential for 10 to 20 percent unemployment in specific sectors if AI adoption accelerates quickly.

$2.8 MILLION NSF GRANT WILL EXPAND AI EDUCATION AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

In collaboration with the NSF Institute for Learning-enabled Optimization at Scale, the project will focus on diversity within the AI research community

July 8, 2024 (San Diego) -- The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)’s ExpandAI program last week awarded San Diego State University a $2.8 million, four-year grant to enhance the existing artificial intelligence infrastructure, education and research capacity and prepare students for careers in AI.
 
The project, “PARTNER: Expanding AI Capacity in San Diego: A Strategic Collaboration between San Diego State University and TILOS AI Institute,” will serve SDSU students as well as K-12 and community college students from diverse backgrounds.

February 25, 2024 (San Diego) -- Ten years ago, angry widespread protests erupted after Michael Brown was killed by a police officer in Ferguson, MO. Called the Ferguson uprising, Brown’s death and the aftermath of unrest and anger brought immediate attention to law enforcement methods in Ferguson and in time was seen as an indictment of policing in the country and here in San Diego1.

TWO SAN DIEGO REPRESENTATIVES NAMED TO HOUSE TASK FORCE ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

February 21, 2024 (San Diego)—San Diego will be well represented on the House of Representatives’ new Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The bipartisan task force’s 24 members include two from San Diego—Democrat Sara Jacobs and Republican Darrell Issa.

The goals of the task force are to explore how Congress can drive innovation and maintain American leadership in AI, assure fair usage of the technology across numerous industries, and safeguard against current and emerging threats.

August 5, 2023 (Sacramento) - The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) announced its groundbreaking partnership with University of California San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia program. With the shared goal of improving firefighting capabilities and response times, CAL FIRE and ALERTCalifornia will embark on an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation trial in collaboration with the San Bernardino Unit, Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit, Nevada Yuba Placer Unit, Shasta-Trinity Unit and San Luis Obispo Unit.
