Aztecs share MW regular season title despite New Mexico defeating them 6-0

November 1, 2019 (Albuquerque) - The San Diego State women’s soccer team needed a win or a draw at New Mexico to win the 2019 Mountain West regular-season crown outright, but the Lobos had other ideas and defeated the Aztecs 6-0 on Friday night.
New Mexico outshot SDSU 19-to-8 and put 11 shots on goal compared to five for the Aztecs.
It looked like the San Diego State (9-8-1, 8-3-0 MW) would get the opening goal when off a corner, Kiera Utush headed the ball which banged off the post early in the 17th minute. But that would be one of the few dangerous chances the Aztecs would have for the remainder of the game.
But on the ensuing possession for New Mexico, Jadyn Edwards got loose behind the defense and went in one-one-one against SDSU keeper Brooke Lisowski. Edwards took the ball on the left side of the box and beat Lisowski low inside the far post.
With two minutes left in the half, the Lobos doubled the lead. In a play that looked like it was offsides, but not called, Edwards again got behind the SDSU defense and hammered a shots that Lisowski got a glove on but it caromed into the net for the 2-0 lead which was the score as the teams went to intermission.
Coming out of the locker room it took barely two minutes for Edwards to get a hat trick which made it 3-0 at the 47:03 mark.
New Mexico (10-7-1, 6-4-1 MW) added goals in the 52nd, 66th and 76 minutes to make the final score 6-0.
Chloe Frisch and McKenna Wallace led the team with two shots apiece. Sarah Broacha, Taylor Moorehead, Darcy Weiser and Rachel Speros were credited with one shot each. Both Wallace shots were on frame.
Despite the loss, San Diego State earns a share of the Mountain West regular season championship, its sixth since the conference was founded in 1999.

“This was a tough game to play in terms of before the game started, we already knew we had at least a share of the regular season title (due to a Boise State loss). I think we let our guard down and weren’t completely ready to go with the game started. Early on we had the header which went off the post, but we didn’t get the put back and they come down and score on us. Then it happened again on the second goal where we are packed into the box on one end and they bust out and get behind us to score. Then they came out and scored early in the second half and that was the nail in the coffin. I got as many of our starters off the field when it was apparent what the outcome would be to try to rest up for next week’s tournament. This was not the way we wanted to win a regular season title, but we will try to make it two trophies when we get to Boise”-SDSU head coach Mike Friesen.

As the No. 2 seed in next week’s Mountain West Championship, the Aztecs have a bye into the semifinal round and will face the winner of the Colorado State (No. 3 seed)/Fresno State (No. 6 seed) matchup on Nov. 7 in Boise, Idaho.
