January 27, 2024 (Malibu) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team wrapped up the ITA Season Kickoff weekend in Malibu, Calif., on Saturday. Facing Loyola Marymount, the Aztecs found themselves with a 2-0 deficit but didn’t look back as they won four consecutive singles matches to earn a 4-2 win.

The Scarlet and Black improve to 1-1 while the Lions fall to 0-3.

“Really great fight back today by the Aztecs,” Head Coach Peter Mattera said after the win. “It was a super team victory against a quality opponent. We had great energy and today was a giant step forward in our second match of the year.”

Andreea Velcea faced Anastasia Bozova on the sixth court. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Velcea bounced back to take the second 6-4 and the deciding third set 6-1 to get San Diego State on the board.

On court No. 4, Gloria Alogo went up against Fiona Arrese. Alogo was bested 6-4 in the first set but also bounced back to win two straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 to even the match score at two.

At the top of the lineup, Yasmine Kabbaj battled Stefania Rogozinska-Dzik. She was the only Aztec to win in straight sets, earning a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Playing on the second court, Andjela Skrobonja played Carlota Molina. After a 7-5 first set victory, she was unable to close it out in the second set, falling 6-1. Skrobonja, however, was able to come through in the third to win 6-3 to clinch a San Diego State victory.

The No. 114-ranked player in the country, Myah Petchey faced Isabella Tcherkes-Zade on court three. Petchey won 6-3 in the first set but came up shy in the tiebreaker of the second set 7-6 (6). Petchey led 4-3 in the third set when SDSU clinched victory.

In her singles match, Olmos fell in straight sets to Romane Longueville 6-3, 6-1 on court No. 5.
