BEWARE OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR SCAMS

August 25, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – If you receive a mailer offering to sell you a carbon monoxide detector in order to comply with a new state law, think twice.

“This is a scam currently going on in the Los Angeles area. It appears the mailing indicates if you don’t kick down $126 for a carbon monoxide detector, you’ll be fined,” warns Leonard Villareal, public information officer for San Miguel Fire Department.

The mailer comes with what appears to be an official-looking notice aimed at duping consumers. While a new state law does require carbon monoxide detectors in homes and rental properties, Villareal clarified, “the location of a purchase and price are free market issues.”
