March 25, 2026 (Santee) – A juvenile riding an electric motorcycle on Mission Gorge Road yesterday afternoon was struck by a passing motorist and fell off the e-motorcycle.

The motorist fled the scene before Sheriff’s deputies arrived.

In a preliminary investigation, statements from witnesses indicate that a group of kids on e-motorcycles were ‘in the roadway causing a hazard -- riding in lanes, holding up traffic,” when the juvenile was struck, said Sgt. Lorenzo Ortiz.

Emergency medical personnel responded and transported the young rider to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“While deputies were on scene, several additional juvenile riders operating e-motorcycles fled the area, riding over center medians and into oncoming traffic, nearly causing additional collisions,” Ortiz said.

The juveniles left their injured friend at the scene.

“Deputies were not pursuing these individuals and were present solely in response to the original collision,” Ortiz adds.

It is currently unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident. The Santee Sheriff's Traffic Unit is actively investigating.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Santee Sheriff's Station at (619) 956-4000.

Thank you. Sometimes I react by yelling at the offender if my personal space is violated suddenly, or if not startled, mentioning the law. The blank look follows with no response. Education and responsibility begins and at home. Apparently this is a reflection of what's to come. Sigh*...

good post. we almost get run over on the walker trail weekly. the adults with them could care less.

Going to get worse...

Because the police don't seem to be enforcing the laws pertaining to these kids and adults riding e-bikes and e-scooters on sidewalks and doing other crazy things that can cause accidents, injuries, or fatalities to themselves. I have witnessed unacceptable riding behavior numerous times in recent times, of which my concerns / complaints to the authorities have had little effect in El Cajon. Recently, I observed several juveniles goofing off on e-bikes and e-scooters at the intersection of Main St. and Ballantyne right in view of an ECPD officer, and nothing was done about it. They were causing a potential traffic hazard as they rode and jumped the curb from a pedestrian sidewalk. California and city laws govern who and what is allowed on a sidewalk, and that does not include motorized transportation such as these devices. Additionally, these kids were clearly underage to be riding these things, and no helmets either as required by law. I often see kids riding with a passenger too. That's illegal. ECPD - do better, please. Pedestrian safety, especially for us seniors should be paramount! I've nearly been hit many times by e-bike and e-scooter riders recently, especially when they approach from behind near silently and whizz past withing arms distance. One wrong move could result in a very bad outcome! Parents - be aware: If your ignorance in allowing your child to ride these modes of transportation for whatever reason or excuse results in a collision with anyone or anything, you most likely will be held accountable for injuries and damages, resulting in potentially tens of thousands of dollars in settlement costs to the victim and more for their attorney. Is it worth the risk to allow your child to use one? Hope you have very good insurance...
