March 16, 2023 (San Diego’s East County) – Joshua Spirz, 18, of Campo died Monday night after a solo vehicle crash on Old Highway 80 at Sunrise Highway. He was driving home from his job at Descanso Junction, which has started a fundraiser to help his family.

“We lost one of our own way too soon,” the GoFundMe page states. “Josh was an amazing man with such a kind heart.”  The restaurant described him as a loving uncle, brother, son and friend who pitched in to help others.  “We are all hurting with his absence…This is when the community needs to rally around and surround his family with support and kind words.”

According to the California Highway Patrol, Spirz was driving a 2000 Toyota Camry when he struck the highway center divider in Pine Valley, crashed into a rock embankment and the vehicle partially overturned.

Spirz, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene of head and neck injuries.

A graduate of Mountain Empire High School in 2022, he was 12 days away from celebrating his 19th birthday.
