EL CAJON POLICE ARREST SUSPECTED BANK ROBBER BASED ON TIPS FOLLOWING MEDIA COVERAGE

August 3, 2011 (El Cajon)--San Diego FBI Special Agent in Charge Keith Slotter announces the arrest of Cathy Rae Salmond, 30, as a result of the investigation into the robbery of the Bank of the West in El Cajon on Friday, July 22.

 

Salmond was arrested on Thursday, July 28 around 12:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the 500 block of North Mollison, El Cajon. She was taken into custody by El Cajon Police Officers on a misdemeanor warrant unrelated to the bank robbery. Salmond was transported to El Cajon Police Department Headquarters, where she was interviewed by an El Cajon Police Detective and an FBI Agent. She was later booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility.

 

On Friday, July 29, 2011, a complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District, of California, charging Salmond with one count of bank robbery. According to the complaint, on the bank was robbed around 3:50 p.m. on July 22 by an unknown white female wearing dark sunglasses and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with the hood over her head. The female walked up to the victim teller and handed over a demand note asking for money. The note indicated that the female suspect’s son was being held hostage and demanded all of the teller’s money. The bank suffered a loss of less than $400.

 

On Saturday, July 23, the FBI issued a news release to the media seeking the public’s assistance to identify the unknown female responsible for robbing the Bank of the West. The news release contained bank surveillance photographs taken during the robbery. The suspect’s photograph was aired on local television stations, appeared in newspapers and posted online to a number of media websites.

“As a direct result of the media dissemination, several calls were received identifying Salmond as the Bank of the West robber,” said Darrell Foxworth, special agent with the FBI.

 

On Monday, August 1, Salmond was transported from the Las Colinas Detention Facility to the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC). She will remain in custody at MCC pending her initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge, on Tuesday, August 2, 2011. This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
