April 12 (Thursday, 6:30–7:30 pm) — Book Publishing 1-2-3: From the Writer’s Fingers to the Reader’s Hands. Sprinkled with stories and tips (e.g., how to find literary agents), this lecture-workshop is designed to empower and inspire writers. We’ll peek at the book business, check out the pros and cons of traditional vs. electronic and self-publishing, discuss genres such as memoir and children’s literature, and share ideas to help writers get published and sell their work. Other highlights: writing exercises, our “Editor’s Tips on Craft” segment, and the Q&A session. 

Presenter: Laurie Gibson, the editor/proofreader who’s worked with more than 100 first-time authors during the past decade. Examples of her work for publishers: "The Color Purple" and "Mrs. Dalloway," as well as the WWII memoir of President Herbert Hoover, several titles by bestselling business author Brian Tracy, and a short story collection by musician Jimmy Buffett.

April 13 (Friday, 6:00 pm) SD Assoc. of Black Journalists Scholarship Reception. The keynote speaker for SDABJ’s 2012 Scholarship Reception is ESPN’s Jemele Hill, who will provide real-world journalism advice to our scholarship winners and audience. The evening will also include food from some of the hottest local restaurants and raffle for exciting prizes and gifts. Come mingle with media professionals and support the future of journalism.

April 14 (Saturday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm) AAJA San Diego is hosting a Scrabble Showdownsponsored by Sycuan Casino so start forming four-person teams and brushing up on your vocabulary! This double-elimination tournament will feature prizes for the top team and top individual player. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit journalism students and AAJA programs.
