TUNE IN JULY 4 TO HEAR OUR RADIO SHOWON KNSJ 89.1 FM!
July 3, 2013 -What could be more fitting than to launch independent media for our region on Independence Day? Our East County Magazine radio show starts tomorrow with two special presentations . Tune in and tell us what you want to hear on community radio!
On July 4, we launch our show with a special live broadcast on the new KNSJ 89.1 FM station at a day-long celebration. East County Magazine 's live broadcast July 4 will be:
10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with interviews of community leaders and newsmakers
2 p.m., a special ECM-produced dramatic presentation--featuring "interviews" our nation's founding fathers--and mothers.
Our July 4 show will be at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park, so if you’re in the area stop by to cheer us on!
East County Magazine's regular radio program will launch next week, broadcasting on Mondays through Fridays at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
on the new KNSJ 89.1 FM station, recording at the San Diego Performance Academy in Santee. Our show will be devoted to the issues that matter most to you!
KNSJ is a nonprofit, public educational and community radio station. The station will broadcast from Descanso in the heart of East County. The signal can be heard from the desert to the coast. KNSJ estimates the station signal has capacity to reach up to 1 million people locally, plus a global reach with online streaming.
On July 4, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., ECM host Miriam Raftery will interview Congresswoman Susan Davis on student loans, El Cajon Councilman Gary Kendrick on the East County Performing Arts Center, Lane Sharman from the San Diego Energy Foundation, Estela de Los Rios on the latest from Washington on the immigration bill, Jeeni Criscenzo on helping homeless women veterans, and Jan Hedlun on the power of citizen activism and community media. Assemblyman Brian Jones will also make a special announcement, plus Ariele Johannson will preview her "Destination East County" show segment and tell you about all the best Fourth of July activities in our region.
At 2 p.m., ECM will present a special dramatization in which we "interview" our founding fathers - and some founding mothers-on the issues of our times. The words they spoke over 200 years ago are as relevant today as they were when America was born. For added fireworks--in the interest of bringing you all sides, we even include an interview with King George III, the monarch against whom the columnists rebelled!.
East County Magazine's regular radio show will roll out next week on 89.1 FM., airing at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
The show will feature ECM's editor interviewing top newsmakers as well as the following specialty segments and more: Green Scene (energy and environmental issues). People Power (profiling people and organizations doing positive things for our community and our world) Tribal Beat (Native American news), Chaldean Corner (news from the Iraqi Chaldean community), Work Shop (focusing on jobs and the economy), East County Trivia Quiz/Friday fun time, Destination East County (festivals, events and attractions), Ready, Set Grow (gardening tips), Wildest Jobs in East County, Bookshelf (highlighting local literary luminaries and their books), Making Music (featuring local musicians), and On the Road in East County (profiling towns across our region). The show will soon also have restaurant reviews, movie reviews, and much more.
KNSJ will feature a wide variety of programming including content by journalists, citizen journalists, local music, local authors, and nationally syndicated programming including BBC news, Democracy Now, plus a wide range of educational programming on issues ranging from science and health to the environment.
The station's vision is to create a community broadcast outlet of and by the people. It will feature a wide variety of voices and views, particularly local voices, that are too often not heard over the airways due to media consolidation. In addition to listening at 89.1 FM, you can also tune in over the Internet to a live stream at www.knsj.org.
East County Magazine's show will augment our existing nonprofit award-winning news site, www.EastCountyMagazine.org which now attracts 150,000 readers a month and has won over 45 major journalism awards.
A note to our Wildfire Alert readers: Very soon, KNSJ will also have live wildfire alerts. It is taking time to work out the technical details and staffing. Watch for a special announcement as soon as the wildfire alerts go live on online.

Thanks to all who helped make our launch a success!
There were a few technical glitches--the station was off air briefly a couple of times during the day and also our 2 pm presentation started 15 minutes late due to speakers who arrived late for earlier shows.
If you didn't hear our presentations, the 10 a.m. one with live interviews will be available soon (waiting on the station's tape of these live interviews)
