Mike T, no it did not happen inside the city limits of El Cajon. It doesn't hurt when trying to help the image of the City when asking journalists to consider the most accurate reporting. I have no problem with "near El Cajon" as that, too, is accurate. However, "in El Cajon" is not fair to residents like me who are donating time and dollars to help make our hometown better. I have brought it up to the City in a council meeting this past summer, and they agreed with my position and would be directing the Public Information Officer to monitor for mislabeling such as this one. I don't know if that occurred or is happening.

unincorporated areas

Many unincorporated areas have mailing addresses with a city name such as El Cajon, La Mesa or Santee. I myself live in an unincorporated area that commonly goes by the city name and has a mailing list for a city. East County is too vague a description in my opinion, encompassing a vast area. Readers want to know if something happens near them so we try to be as specific as we can. In some cases that means listing a neighborhood or community, if we're familiar with the neighborhood or if it is provided by authorities, so we might say Eucalyptus Hills or Rancho San Diego or Mt. Helix. We did not have a neighborhood name for this incident and went with the headline the Sheriff provided, but made clear in the text that this is an unincorporated area--as did every other news media outlet.

unincorporated El Cajon murder victim identified

ECM1280 Sorry my post had too many question marks. The article does not state it was with in the city limits. It states "unincorporated El Cajon" so this article is accurate. News 8 Headline reads: "El Cajon murder victim identified" But later clarifies as unincorporated El Cajon. http://www.cbs8.com/story/25889087/el-cajon-murder-victim-identified I think you have a steep uphill battle, who would put "unincorporated" in a headline? If you took a poll from everyone in "unincorporated El Cajon" and ask them "Where do you live?" ...

City Limits not stated

This didn't occur in El Cajon? City Limits? USPS? unincorporated El Cajon? If you are trying to clean up the image of "El Cajon", is asking to change news headlines the best way to do it? I searched a bit. Every one assumes this is "El Cajon" or "Near El Cajon" "EL CAJON, Calif." http://fox5sandiego.com/2014/11/29/mans-death-prompts-homicide-investigation/ News 7 states "near El Cajon" http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Deputies-Investigate-Unusual-Death-Near-El-Cajon--284268881.html "Man Found Dead Inside El Cajon home" http://www.sandiegocountynews.com/2014/11/29/man-found-dead-inside-el-cajon-home/ I'm guessing you have tried to get these headlines change too, and some sources added "near". In that area I wonder what people say, when they are asked where they live? El Cajon? Good luck in your quest to change the image of "El Cajon" Or the "Incorporated El Cajon" image.

Headline Not Accurate

Since this didn't occur in El Cajon, would you please consider changing the headline to "..in East County" or "in the Winter Gardens area of East County"? While the USPS labels some areas adjacent to El Cajon's city limits as "El Cajon", I believe this should not carry over to news reporting. The city of El Cajon is trying hard to clean up its image, and your assistance would be appreciated.
