May 17, 2018 (El Cajon) – The City of El Cajon has launched the Stay Cool El Cajon campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving children and pets in hot cars. Last year in the United States, 43 children died as a result of being left in hot vehicles. Since 1984, 804 children have died from heat-related illnesses in cars.
El Cajon Assistant City Manager Graham Mitchell stated “The City’s message is clear, there are no excuses for leaving kids or pets alone in a vehicle.”
This past spring, the City of El Cajon partnered with a San Diego State University marketing class to develop the Stay Cool El Cajon campaign. Based on survey results, students put together key messages aimed at dispelling common excuses for leaving kids or pets in cars, such as: “I parked in the shade,” “I cracked the windows,” and, “I only left for a few minutes.”
Hot cars quickly become dangerous, even deadly, for kids and pets. In fact, 80 percent of the heating in a car happens in the first 10 minutes. On an 80 degree day, it only takes 10 minutes for the internal temperature of a car to reach 99 degrees.
As part of the campaign, the City will host two demonstrations during this weekend’s America on Main Street and the upcoming Animal Shelter Dedication. A special digital thermometer will be connected to a vehicle, courtesy of Toyota & Honda of El Cajon, to show how dangerously hot the interior of a vehicle can become in a matter of seconds and minutes.
Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child or pet alone in a car, not even for a minute. If you see a child or pet alone in a vehicle, take action. Call 911. Emergency personnel are trained to respond to these situations.
