May 6, 2024 (El Cajon) -- The El Cajon Police Department announces success of a new approach to capturing retail thieves. In March, ECPD announced implementation of an innovative crime-solving technique utilizing the power of social media.

This approach aims to swiftly identify suspects and solve cases with greater efficiency, making an immediate and tangible impact on the community and retail theft.

“We are harnessing the power of social media to disseminate information,” said Chief of Police Mike Moulton. “In a matter of minutes, we are able to provide images and descriptions of thieves. Our community has responded by assisting our efforts and giving information that leads to arrests.”

This approach not only underscores the crucial role of the community as active partners in crime prevention and resolution, but it also empowers them with the knowledge that their participation is instrumental in our success.

“Our community members are fed up with thieves who target our community,” Moulton said. “We are sending a message to would be criminals that we will identify them and we will find them.”

Information shared on social media platforms has led to the identification and apprehension of suspects within a short timeframe. As a result, nearly all of the cases featured on social media have been closed.

Through social media, ECPD says it has significantly impacted retail theft in the city, identifying four potential suspects in under 24 hours.

In one instance, a father brought his two sons to the police department after learning they were featured on social media stealing from a store. This success story is just one example of how the El Cajon Police Department is forging stronger bonds of trust and collaboration with the community it serves.

As a daily visitor to ECM several times a day, I'd like to see the El Cajon Police & Sheriff's departments send information to this sites editor quickly so that articles which are pertinent can be posted in a timely manner for us faithful readers to view, then we might be more aware and possibly help. Not everyone has social media accounts, with some postings unreadable due to that fact. Yes, I'm aware that ECPD has a Facebook page, yet it's not my go to place for daily news. Neither is X.
