March 3, 2011 (San Diego) -- Shana and Robert ParkeHarrison, famed photographers who combine sculpture, painting and theatrics to create surreal, fabricated images, will be featured in a conversation led by Arthur Ollman, director of the School of Art, Design and Art History at San Diego State University, at the Museum of Photographic Art’s Irwin and Joan Jacobs Theater at 7:30 p.m., March 9. The presentation, “Mending the World: The Collision of Nature, Culture & Humanity,” sponsored by the SDSU Art Council, will explore their art, exposing mankind’s impact on the environment in a way that is haunting and emotionally gripping.

The ParkeHarrison creative collaboration has resulted in international acclaim, a Guggenheim Fellowship, 19 solo exhibitions and more than 30 group shows around the world. Their work is found in many prestigious museum and corporate collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the George Eastman House. Their monograph The Architect’s Brother, now in its seventh edition, was named one of the 10 best photography books of 2000 by The New York Times.

“Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison illustrate the poignant mis-match between the scale of our environmental problems and our individually earnest -- yet frighteningly small -- efforts to address them,” said Ollman. “In every image Robert portrays the protagonist, a mash-up of Charlie Chaplin and a Samuel Beckett character, who tries with all his energy and great invention to clean, heal or simply communicate with the earth. There is little precedent for this work. Its uniqueness has brought them worldwide and well-deserved attention and helped focus our vision on the task immediately before us.”

Tickets to the ParkeHarrison presentation are available in advance for $20 general admission, $15 for Art Council and MOPA members and $10 for SDSU Students with ID. Contact Kim Wright, 619-594-1213 (Monday-Friday) at the SDSU School of Art, Design, and Art History to reserve seats. If available, tickets at the door will be $25.

The SDSU Art Council is an all-volunteer, membership organization providing philanthropic support for the School of Art, Design and Art History and serving as a bridge between the School and the San Diego community.
