March 19, 2023 (San Diego) -- The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ) has issued an advisory for all county beaches and bays due to contamination from storm runoff. This incudes closure of one coastal area and advisories cautioning of potential contamination at numerous other beaches.

New Beach Management Actions:

Closure – ¼ mile north of Batiquitos Lagoon Outlet at South Ponto State Beach

The water contact closure currently in place for Batiquitos Lagoon Outlet at South Ponto State Beach has been reduced based on sample results. The revised closure area is ¼ mile north of Batiquitos Lagoon Outlet. The public is advised to avoid water contact as the water is impacted by sewage and may cause illness.

On-going Beach Management Actions:

General Rain Advisory

DEHQ has issued a General Rain Advisory for all coastal beaches and bays due to recent rainfall. Beachgoers are advised that rain brings urban runoff, which can cause bacteria levels to rise significantly in ocean and bay waters, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers, and lagoon outlets, and may cause illness. Water contact such as swimming, surfing, and diving should be avoided during rain and for 72 hours following the rain event.

Advisory - Children’s Pool in La Jolla, Campland and Crown Cove

The above beaches remain under advisory. Beach goers are advised that bacteria levels have exceeded State health standards and may cause illness.

Closure - Tijuana Slough, Imperial Beach, Silver Strand, and Coronado Shorelines

The ocean shoreline from the International Border to Coronado will remain closed until sampling confirms these areas are safe for water contact. The Tijuana River is flowing, with sewage contamination reaching recreational waters.

Closure – Buccaneer Beach

The ocean shoreline at Buccaneer Beach will remain closed until sampling confirms this area is safe for water contact.
